A "thumbs up" sounds good to me. Or maybe just a label that says "useful post."

If you really wanted to be hacky you could just replace these images with other files with the same names, right?:

https://github.com/satanasov/postlove/tree/master/images

That's assuming they are fetched from a local copy, though.

The heart is actually starting to grow on me. I mean, if I happen to be talking to someone and they say something I find interesting, I'm not likely to put my thumb up at them. Granted, I'm not going to "give them love", either but it just seems warmer, more friendlier, somehow.

I've asked on Github if a pull request would be accepted. :)

The extension author is probably very fond of their heart, and they may not want to change it! :-)

But we don't necessarily have to run the official version of the plugin. We can run the "arthaey/postlove" version instead, if that's what people want to do. I think there might also be a way to customize this particular plugin using some kind of site-wide CSS override.

Gotta say it weirds me out too, I'd much rather a plus one or thumbs up icon / message.

I like the hearts, but it would be funny to have some birds’ and animals’ reactions, for example:

Your post make me angry and surprised:

Oh no! I am shocked, or I can’t do this:

I am surprised, but i agree with you:

I don’t like what you’ve said:

What an intellectual point!

Please don’t do this, we are friends!:

Yup, totally agreed. I'd like to contribute back if it's wanted by the original author, but I have no problems forking if y'all have no problem using a non-official version. :)

Purely as an experiment, I've added three extensions to the forum software. These are all highly experimental, and they may go away at any moment! But please feel free to kick the tires and let know what you think.

A French language pack. You can now change your UI language between British English and French in your user control panel. This might be useful for those folks trying to immerse in their target language. If folks like this, I imagine that we could look into adding well-supported language packs for major languages. (I'd love to add as many languages as possible, but maintaining forum quality comes first.)
An "Active Subjects" link. Look up at the top of your screen!
A very experimental voting system called "Post Love". This lets you vote up posts by clicking on the heart. But there's a major difference: Your votes are visible to other users now.

Once again, these extensions are totally experimental, and they may all disappear tomorrow. Please let me know if you discover any nasty surprises!

1. LanguagePacks. I have used the French pack since the day emk installed it. No problems yet. I would vote for other packs being added, especially, for me, Spanish.
2. Active Subjects. Et voilà: Sujets actifs.
3. Post Love. The form of the symbol--heart, thumb up, checkered flag--whatever--matters little to me. I do like to see who votes for my posts, but it is immaterial to me whether I see who votes along with me for others' posts.

It hasn't been mentioned yet but I think a bright yellow star would be the best option. I have nothing against the meaning behind the current image, but something less red and heart shaped would appeal more to me. No matter what, I think both thumbs and stars are pretty iconic. Hearts are a little more geocities/myspace.
