I'm experimenting with adding various phpBB extensions. Apparently, one consequence of this is that the site may run slowly while it rebuilds various internal caches.
My apologies for the slowdown! Hopefully things should speed back up soon.

So is there no possibility of using a paid software like XenForo in the future? Not that phpBB isn't a significant improvement already. I realize that I'm putting the cart before the horse here, that things haven't been ironed out as to whether this is even our permanent solution. Just interested in hearing ANY ideas floating around.

HTLAL was actually based on pretty good paid forum software, but it aged badly, because the company stopped making major enhancements, and the community was pretty small. I think that if we're building a community for the long run, going with proprietary software a second time would be a bad bet.
There is some pretty good open source forum software out there. If it turns out that phpBB isn't what we want, at least nearly all forum software can import phpBB data, because it's such a common choice.

Thanks emk! If phpBB is the plan for the foreseeable future, stick with it. Big changes to a forum can be like kryptonite.
