Now I have a new working title and an abstract:

Meaning of 'Space' in the Cyberspace - A Case Study on Immigration of an Online Community

The purpose of this paper is to analyze an immigration process of an online community and identify the relationship between online communities and space. Traditionally, space or area context has been identified as one of the main elements of a community. Development of New Media has however facilitated trans-spatial online interactions, hinting at the possibility of a spatially unrestrained community. As such, the role of spatial context has often been overcome by, or substituted by the internet in recent research on community. Meanwhile, numerous papers have been published that identified online communities as networks of individualized agents rather than 'communities', based on the trans-spatial and individualized nature of online interactions. In this context, this paper attempts to broaden understanding of online communities by tracing the process by which online communities do interact with spatial factors.

A case study was conducted of a language learning community, which has been continuously active from 2004. This community was created in a forum founded by a Swiss language learner. During the summer of 2015, the community carried out a migration into a different domain of a different server to preserve the community against absence of the founder-administrator, frequent technical problems and an approaching domain expiry. The opinions posted by members forum were used to reconstruct the situation, and their discourses on the community's nature and migration were analyzed. The results show three dimensions of space that interact with the online community. Firstly the context of physical space, in which the server and members are located, restrict linguistic culture and interaction among members. Secondly, there is the context of cyberspace which is represented by the specific forum with the specific domain. This location on the cyberspace allows for accumulation of posts and development of culture and tradition, while also restricting technological developments. Lastly, an online community can also create its own social space that differentiate it from other communities, as the members that share its unique culture and knowledge create its own distinctive sense of place.
