Re: Wanderlust Support Group

No amount of cajoling or speaking "sense" to wanderlusters will sway them from their path if that's what they want to do. In fact, the only way that they will see for themselves that it, in all likelihood, will not allow them to advance to a high level in a language is to try it. It will b...

Re: How do you treat different dialects and accents in your TL?

Almost all languages have dialects and accents. For pluri-centric languages like Spanish and Portuguese, there's a macro level and a micro level. With Spanish, there's Castilian and Latin American on a macro level. On a more micro level there's Mexican, Central American, Caribbean, Rio Platense, etc...

Re: Idiomatic Spanish - best resources?

Welcome to the forum! When you get a chance, have a look at our Spanish Group here on the forum. I'm surprised emk didn't mention translated comic books- Calvin and Hobbes, The Walking Dead, Blacksad, etc. Especially if you have the English originals they can be a great source of translated idioms. ...

Re: Comfort Zones and Efficiency

... what does it look like NOT to leave one's comfort zone? Where does the line between efficiency and sloppiness fall, in your opinion? How can we avoid errors on either side of the spectrum? I can't address efficiency as I am probably the least efficient member of the forum. I don't count hours, ...

Re: Anecdotal evidence for extensive TV series

My most recent experience with using TV in language-learning was with Portuguese. To be fair, I already spoke Spanish to a high level when I learned it about six years ago. I did a multi-track approach with DLI, Pimsleur, NHK news with a transcript, chatting and a private tutor who spoke no English....

Re: The iguana's tale- Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Ladino

Portuguese Work has been busy at present which hasn't left me enough time to read. I've still got a third of O homem do castelo alto left to finish. It's a very good book and I would recommend reading it in any language, especially if you like 1960's sci-fi/alt history/philosophy/cultural explorati...

Re: THE FORUM HAS BEEN HACKED (AND FIXED, AND MOVED TO A NEW SERVER) - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

If we ever needed a reminder of why we left HTLAL, here it is. Nobody likes outages, but they happen from time to time. The difference here at LLORG is: 1) The administrators communicated with us 2) The administrators fixed the problem in a timely manner This didn't happen at our former home in the ...

Re: French In Action, as a learning device?

It was more that when I see things like this number, I refer to a reference such as the one found here . While it notes the amounts of time listed in its chart correspond to teaching hours, it surprised me that the total hours for self-study would be 5 times more than that (160 on their chart and 8...

Re: Rounding out the Romance languages

First, welcome to the forum, bpasseri! I can only tell you what I've done. I can't tell you what will work best for you or what works best for others. I leveraged Spanish to help me learn Portuguese not by "laddering" (learning Portuguese through Spanish) but by using my knowledge of Spani...
