Re: Question about the notorious Welsh/Icelandic "Double L"

Ok, I think I've managed to de-construct the Welsh 'll'.... Open your mouth/jaw slightly, but keep it relaxed. Place the front part of your tongue against the back of your top teeth/front of the roof of your mouth area. Blow air out. Your tongue should flatten slightly, and the air flow around the ...

Re: How Did You Learn Your First Foreign Language?

Technically, I guess I must consider Spanish my first, as I started with it in 8th grade, and continued till 10th. But I didn't learn much besides the days of the week, the months, and how to say "I want to sleep with you." My "real" first foreign language I learned in the Defen...

Re: Need to go from A0-->B1 Spanish in a few weeks

It's not the first time and certainly not the last. I doubt we're so scary. Some language learners cross post on a number of forums and then disappear. For some advice seekers, posting here is kind of like posting on the Windows annoyances forum. Iguanamon and Tommus would like them to state their ...

How Did You Learn Your First Foreign Language?

Something I've been wondering is: do most people learn their first language through a class or tutoring, rather than self-taught? As much as I believe in the possibilities of self-learning, I realize that I could not fathom self-learning if I hadn't taken Spanish classes in high school for my first ...

Re: Adventures in Hebrew (and a bit of Japanese)

Good luck with Hebrew! I just got done taking a the second term of a beginning Hebrew class at my university. From what I could tell most people took it because they were Jewish or interested in Judaism and then three of us had the additional need for a non indo-european language for our degree (ap...

Re: Adventures in Hebrew (and a bit of Japanese)

Welcome! Hebrew is on my temptation list, due to my possibly Jewish heritage, and because all the churches I've gone to have had a high regard for the Jewish culture.

How did you reach such a high level in Japanese? I studied it for a year at college, and I hope to return to it in the future.

Re: Ways to study verbs

I'm definitely more of a traditional learner in that regard: I want to be given clear rules before I can appreciate the game. I like Assimil, but I wish they were more up-front with verb conjugations.

Re: Xenops Mostly Tackles French (and some other languages)

I was thinking of suggesting to you to read the Bible in French, and you're doing just that. If you look around you should be able to find audio of the Bible as well. Similarly, there are a couple French music artists who are Christian and you might enjoy. Yohan Salvat had a short album called Les ...

Re: 2017 Language Festival in Montreal

My only concern is that by that time I'll only be fluent in English, intermediate in French, and very rusty intermediate in Spanish: would that be held against me?
