Re: Got stuck at C1 in English

I can understand 80% what natives write and speak, read lots of modern and classic literature, listen to English podcasts and audiobooks, write lots of essays and give to natives to check... But! My level has frozen around C1. What about series and movies? If you don’t have anything against series ...

Re: Writing

Since I'm doing it right now… I write it in my target language (English) without any translating back and forth, or at least I think I do. Maybe it’s just a mix of Russian and English. Either way, if I can’t formulate some thought in English I usually can’t do it in Russian either. If I try t...

Re: Менее/Меньше и Дольше/Дальше?

It will be off-topic probably but all that conversation about долгий/длиный and a marginal-slang usage reminded me of an old episode of the kids show "Ералаш", more precisely the first episode. It was filmed in the middle 70s so the slang in there is a little outdated https://www.youtube.c...

Re: Does early speaking lead to fossilized mistakes?

It means no attempt to produce language at all to begin with. I don't believe in it myself, as it seems to assume learning a second language is like learning a first, which is not true. Thank you. It seems I got the idea right. And I don't believe in it either, because of my "unvoluntary"...

Re: Менее/Меньше и Дольше/Дальше?

I'd added to the posts above that "меньше" may be also translated as "smaller" in sentences like "Этот дом меньше, чем тот дом"/"This house is smaller then that house"

Re: Does early speaking lead to fossilized mistakes?

Since “silent period” is one of the ways to prevent fossilized mistake, I'd want to clear something for myself about it. Does “silent period” mean that during this period of time a language learner will train speaking and writing but just doesn’t communicate with other “real” people in a target lang...

Re: Comfort Zones and Efficiency

I’ve never taken any serious tests or exams therefore my self-assessment is based only on results of various Internet-tests and my subjective feeling. I don’t have some structured plan either. Usually it is just ends and means, i.e. I have a goal and a preferred approach that could be later modified...

It's an interesting thought. And your guess probably is closer to the truth than mine :)

Re: Best Book Only Read in L2

I’m afraid that among books I’ve read in L2 is no book that fits both criteria. But probably I just confuse “best” and “great”. So I’ll write a little about Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. The book is based on historic events (maybe no more than Alexandr Duma’s books did, but it’s just a fiction after all)...
