Re: French In Action, as a learning device?

aka "leaving the comfort zone", which a lot of us refuse to do (and don't even realise it). I totally agree with you smallwhite, getting to the point where we are willing to get out of our comfort zone is sometimes very difficult! The other day I listened to a little video of Luca where h...

Re: From what point is it safe to start another language?

Now you should learn the Spanish Subjuncive, unless you know it already, and then explain it to me once and for all... Please. Hah, I wish I could explain those, but I still get simple subjunctives wrong half the time. It's so annoying, because even 5 year olds use those correctly. But then, my hus...

Re: From what point is it safe to start another language?

By the way, I found two exemples where you can find "the deep knowledge of a language" here: "The deep knowledge of a language needed to converse spontaneously is not focussed on or even acknowledged ..." I'm bad at explaining grammar, but I think here the second part of the sen...

Re: From what point is it safe to start another language?

To gain the deep knowledge of a language you just have to be patient and do things methodically. Personally I have never noticed any mistakes in Luca's English. I just listened to a video of his in English and specifically kept my ears open, but I couldn't find a single problem in a 6min video. And...

Re: Anecdotal evidence for extensive TV series

French: 270h extensive listening, of which 245h were dubbed TV series, the rest native movies and France culture. I would estimate my listening level at B2, since I still run into problems with too much slang or with certain accents - especially foreigners speaking bad French. With certain movies I ...

Re: Listening vs Comprehension (and the case against TV) [interesting article]

It may be different for languages other than Russian, but from my experience what you've described there is a B1 exam and not B2. For a B2 exams you'll get real world audio clips complete with low quality recordings, background noise and scenes from films. B1 is where you'd get dialogs read by acto...

Re: Listening vs Comprehension (and the case against TV) [interesting article]

Thanks, but I mean real experience rather than guesses. Well, anyone who'd pay for an expensive B2 exam and then try to pass it on 10-20h listening no matter whether intensive or extensive is excessively optimistic in my eyes, so I can't help you with "real experiences" like that :D In fa...

Re: Listening vs Comprehension (and the case against TV) [interesting article]

an you reach B2 in Cat I & II languages with 10 to 20 hours of TV? As always with intensive vs extensive activities there is a trade off. Of course you progress faster with intensive activities, but they are also harder to bear and more like "work" rather than fun. I can deal with int...

Re: Lilly's log - French, Russian and reluctant Spanish

Spanish I was really feeling spaced out yesterday, so I couldn't concentrate much. That's always the best time to watch silly series, so I watched a few episodes of El internado . By the way, when killing off one of the main "good guys" becomes a reason for cheering they are clearly doing...
